Milestones newspaper, published by Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, has won three national Mature Media Awards; the May and June 2009 issues won Merit Awards for general excellence in the Media and Community Organizations category; and one of writer Joe Clark’s articles won a Silver Medal.
“This is the seventh straight year we’ve won Mature Media Awards,” said Linda Riley, PCA’s director of communications and legislative affairs and a PRSA member. “Much of the credit goes to Hollister Creative, which provides editorial and design services.”
A free monthly newspaper, Milestones provides older adults with news, health tips, activities and opportunities for involvement. Milestones is distributed free at more than 800 locations in Philadelphia, and has a readership of more than 165,000 people, according to Riley.
One of the winning editions, May 2009, was the annual arts issue, and Riley said it served as a model for a new, more focused editorial approach, begun in August of this year. “Each issue now has a center section with in-depth articles on various aspects of one broad topic,” she said. “The August issue focuses on lifelong learning; September’s focuses on employment; and October’s focuses on health care.” An editorial calendar is online at www.pcamilestones.org.
“Taking this approach will enable us to provide more thorough coverage of important topics,” Riley said. “We think these issues will become ‘keepers’ for readers, something they’ll refer to over and over.”
The new Milestones retains all of the most popular features of the paper, including the centerfold calendar, health briefs, editor’s column, food columns and the crossword puzzle.

Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), a private, non-profit Area Agency on Aging, was established in 1973 to coordinate social services for Philadelphians who are older or who have disabilities and to assist them in achieving optimum levels of health, independence, and productivity. One of the region’s largest non-profit organizations, PCA is funded in part by the federal Older Americans Act, Medical Assistance, and the Pennsylvania Lottery, all channeled through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.
